Welcome to the 2^nd MycoKey Technological Workshop!

It is our pleasure to invite you to the 2^nd MycoKey Technological Workshop which will be held in Bucharest, Romania on June 7-8, 2018. The event is organized by the National R&D Institute for Food Bioresources – IBA Bucharest and hosted by the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest.

The theme of the event is “MycoKey: a new approach for mycotoxin management in the maize chain in East Europe”.

The natural contamination of the agricultural crops by various toxigenic fungi occurs frequently and it poses a great worldwide concern to society, affecting international trade and causing significant economic losses annually.

Contamination of maize crops with aflatoxins represents a serious food safety issue, with larger implications for the bakery industry. Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness of the presence of mycotoxins in cereal crops and to manage effectively these contaminants along the food and feed chains, as well as to know their environmental impact at different stages of the crop’s life cycle.

The EU MycoKey project aims to generate innovative and integrated solutions that will support stakeholders in effective and sustainable mycotoxin management along food and feed chains. The main objectives of the EU MycoKey project are to improve the mycotoxin knowledge and to innovate the risk communication on mycotoxin management by using ICT solutions, providing information to improve legislation, strengthening knowledge and partnership relations, and selecting and enhancing mycotoxin monitoring tools and assessing the use of reliable solutions, sustainable compounds, and environmental technologies for prevention, intervention and remediation. The MycoKey project is addressed not only to the scientific community, but also to farmers and livestock farmers, but also to the food industry, consumers and decision-makers and legislators. The project’s activities underline the need to reduce cereal crops (wheat, maize, barley) and dry fruits and grapes with mycotoxins and draws attention to the need for effective and sustainable management of mycotoxins along the food chain.

The Bucharest’s MycoKey workshop will focus on mycotoxin management in the maize crops, on customized and descriptive information regarding contamination risks, decision support and practical intervention suggestions. We welcome scientists, professionals, companies, governmental officials and professional associations working in food and feed related sectors to join our interactive international event.

In Romania, arable land and permanent crops cover 9.9 million ha. Main cereal crops include wheat, maize, rye and barley, where maize covers approx. 2500 thou ha. The country has a tradition in wheat and maize cultivation, for both domestic and international markets. Therefore, we find Bucharest an ideal location for an interactive workshop on mycotoxin management in maize chain in East Europe.

National Institute of Research and Development for Food Bioresources – IBA Bucharest is a public research organization with extra-budgetary funding, coordinated by the Ministry of Research and Innovation, with research activity in food and nutrition, food products and technology development, as well as services in the field, including small scale production of personalized food.

The Venue:

The 2nd MycoKey Technological Workshop organised by IBA Bucharest will be held at  the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest – USAMV Bucharest, Faculty of Agriculture.

This is the oldest and largest institution of higher agronomic education in Romania, founded in 1852, where the tradition and modernity successfully meet.

USAMV belongs to the network of public higher education institutions recognized with the “High level of academic trust” award in 2010, which programmes of study are accredited/authorized.
